Musical Facilitation Training with Starling Sessions

  • Old Fire Station Studio 40 George Street Oxford, England, OX1 2AQ United Kingdom (map)

Tue 10th, 10am-5pm
OFS Studio | Free

Starling Sessions bring together musicians from different countries, cultures and musical backgrounds to exchange, collaborate and learn from each other.

Join facilitators Lauren Spiceley & John Ruddock in a day-long workshop that will explore the method and practice used at Starling Sessions, and the skills needed for leadership and facilitation in a musical context. The training will include how to build a good group dynamic, how to teach and learn by ear and ways of facilitating peer-to-peer learning.

The day will involve participatory workshops, group discussions, and the chance to put your learning into action as we make music together.

We will cover topics including:

  • Identifying and improving specific knowledge, skills and attitudes needed in musical facilitation of multicultural and mixed ability groups.

  • Exploring issues arising from working with mixed ability and multicultural workshop groups, and methods for overcoming these issues.

  • Understanding the relevance of this method of facilitation to encourage active participation of musicians of mixed ability, to foster their will and capacity to meet and interact with diverse groups of musicians.

  • An introduction to group theory in the context of creative workshops.

  • Reflecting and sharing of previous coaching experiences of diverse music groups.

  • Putting tools and methods into practice in real workshop situations.

This workshop is ideally suited to musicians looking to expand their practice into facilitation, or thinking about their facilitation practice in intercultural contexts. You do not need to have had formal musical training, or extensive performance experience. Some experience of group music-making and a reasonable level of comfort with at least one instrument (including vocalists.)

Places are free, registration is essential. We encourage you to make a PWYD (pay what you decide) contribution for the training, if you are able, here: https://ko-fi.com/starlingsessions

We are able to offer a limited number of funded places to compensate for loss of earnings/access costs. Contact Lauren lauren@tandemcollective.org to discuss your access needs.

If you have any questions about the training, or any access needs to discuss, contact Lauren: lauren@tandemcollective.org
